Who Uses Internet Forums

It’s surprising really. The more you hang out online the more you come to think how small is the internet community out there. Maybe there are millions of people online, but there are small cliques of communities people hang around in, like tribal grounds.

I come across people I know in separate forums all the time. I noticed someone in a private forum that I’ve also seen into on numerous occasions at other sites. Coincidence?

It’s not the first time I’ve seen that person’s name or avatar, or handle. It seems to happen quite frequently.

Is that a good thing or meaningless? It is part of doing things online. Searching online for information means you bump into other people of similar needs or preferences. It means you gravitate to like minded groups of people and build relationships and also build personal relationships with some. You get to share personal experiences. You can help each other with experiences, mistakes, and successes.

Social sites are increasingly more open to public exchange of thoughts and opinions. Some are private and open to guests or registered users. If you haven’t already done so, find a forum that interests you and check out a few that may be not your usual hobby. There are some bad ones, but you’ll find the good ones.

You’ll start to get to know the people quickly and most members are generous in helping out newcomers as long as they don’t start dominating discussion threads. Just like going to a new party you don’t want to come across as a know it all or a demanding and insufferable bore. Gradually start participating and test the reception.

There are forums for everything. Whatever you’re involved in. If you have a profession, there’s a forum for it. If you have a hobby, there’s bound to be an enthusiasts forum for it.

More and more it seems everything has been written about and there are multiple opinions on every topic you can think of. But when you look for information on the Internet how do you know it’s validity, authority, or accuracy? that’s where social sites and forums that allow debate can help sift the chaff from the wheat.

just like Wikipedia allows people to present information, thousands of readers can then give input if it is accurate. Social sites and forums let participants vote up or down on whether someone wrote something good or bad.

You can learn an endless number of things. Not just something that you already know a little or a lot about. Things drawn from experience are better than from a textbook. It’s interactive, in real time and up to date. If you ask there is usually someone waiting with an answer. You can search forum databases for topics and threads that could contain valuable information.

Don’t be bashful. Get in there and contribute to the conversation.
